Night Flower Punch House
INTRODUCTION
Night Flower is a speakeasy cocktail bar located in Wellington New Zealand. It has taken inspiration from the early 1910s Art Nouveau decor, ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910. Night Flower is a place where the most elite cocktail connoisseur come to enjoy a meticulously made classic cocktails.
THE ASSIGNMENT
Brand Identity for the bar which would capture the essence of Art Nouveau style and provoke a sense of mystery.
THE CONCEPTION
It was important for me that the brand design reflected the magical and sexy ornamental aesthetics of Art Nouveau but in a modern age style. I also wanted to incorporate the idea of mystery and secrecy in the design of the logo.
THE SOLUTION
To incorporate the feeling of mystery and secrecy, I have taken inspiration from the Rubin Vase; a famous set of ambiguous or bi-stable two-dimensional forms developed around 1915 by the Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin. Finding a speakeasy is like finally noticing that there are two faces in the Rubin Vase or vice versa. It was there all along but you wouldn’t have known until someone hadn’t told you about it.
The aesthetics of Art Nouveau was achieved using the curved lines and the pattern commonly found in Alphonse Mucha’s illustrations.
